An Egyptian soldier was shot and killed on Sunday evening south of the city of Sheikh Zuweid in the Sinai Peninsula, Egyptian security sources told Ma’an.The sources said that alleged snipers targeted an Egyptian army unit stationed near the “dangerous” Najd Square junction setting up new military checkpoints.
The attack resulted in the killing of Abd al-Rauf Ashraf Abd al-Rauf, 25, who was shot in the chest.. The sources added that a large explosion injured four Egyptian soldiers and four passersby — including a child — in the city of al-Arish, and that all eight victims were evacuated to the military hospital in al-Arish.
They said that a booby-trapped vehicle parked on the roadside was detonated remotely when an Egyptian army explosives detection vehicle passed by.
Egyptian military and police forces have been the target of ongoing attacks, which have increased since Egyptian President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi took power from democratically-elected Muhammad Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013.
The Egyptian president came under attack following his violent suppression of Muslim Brotherhood members following his rise to power, which Sisi has argued is necessary to deter future attacks in the Sinai and across Egypt.
