Palestinian-succumbs-to-wounds-sustained-during-military-raid-in-HebronMuhammad Ahmad Abed al-Fattah al-Sarrahin was shot with live fire after Israeli forces stormed the village. Both Muhammad and his father, Ahmad, were detained during the raid. Witnesses said at the time that al-Sarrahin was wounded with live ammunition after a fist fight broke out between him and a group of Israeli soldiers while they attempted to raid his home. The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed that al-Sarrahin had succumbed to injuries sustained during the detention raid.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that security forces apprehended one Palestinian suspect during a military operation in Beit Ula, while another attempted to flee the scene. During the pursuit of the second suspect, Israeli forces opened live fire on him. The spokesperson added that the case is being reviewed by the Israeli army.

Al-Sarrahin became the 223rd Palestinian killed by Israeli forces in a span of just under a year when a wave of violence first erupted across the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel in October. While the majority were killed by Israeli forces after carrying out or allegedly carrying out attacks on Israeli soldiers and settlers, a large number have been killed in clashes with Israeli soldiers during raids on Palestinian villages, towns, and refugee camps. While using live fire on Palestinians is only permitted when Israeli soldiers are considered to be in imminent danger, they often open fire on Palestinians indiscriminately as a “crowd control” tactic during military raids. Israeli police and soldiers have come under heavy criticism over the past year by rights groups for excessive use of force against Palestinians who did not pose an immediate threat or who could have been detained through non-violent means.
A report recently released by the Palestinian NGO BADIL, the Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights, warned of an intensification of the “systematic targeting” of Palestinians by Israeli forces in the occupied Palestinian territory since the beginning of 2016.
“This targeting has taken the form of injuries and arbitrary killings by the use of live ammunition by the Israeli army in the context of arrest campaigns, military raids, and random wide searches which usually trigger clashes,” the statement said.
