Off-duty-police-officer-shot,Police spokesman Luay Irzeiqat said in a statement that “outlaws opened fire from a speeding car at an off-duty, plain-clothes police officer in eastern Jenin city.”

The assailants then fled the scene. Irzeiqat said the officer sustained injuries and was evacuated to a hospital for treatment. He did not identify the officer or give details about the nature of the injuries. The statement only referred to the victim as adjutant in Jenin’s Criminal Investigation Department. Irzeiqat added that Palestinian police were investigating the shooting.Last Monday an unidentified gunman opened fire in the village of Bir al-Basha southwest of Jenin, with no injuries reported.

Palestinian police, national security services officers, and military intelligence officers were later able to track him down and arrest him, Irzeiqat said at the time.Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah announced in July plans to amend the penal code and “arrest all fugitives and put them to justice,” amid an ongoing crackdown of PA security forces on criminal activity in the West Bank.

The crackdown turned deadly last month, after two Palestinian policemen were killed during a raid into the Old City of Nablus in the northern occupied West Bank. The ensuing manhunt left two Palestinians shot dead by police, and the suspected “mastermind” behind the shooting beaten to death in jail after his arrest.
The United Nations and Palestinian factions from across the political spectrum reacted with outrage, calling the killings by Palestinian police “extrajudicial executions.”
