Since a wave of unrest erupted across Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory almost a year ago, a large number of Palestinians have been killed or wounded while allegedly carrying out or attempting to carry out stabbing attacks on Israeli security forces and settlers.Occupied East Jerusalem’s Old City and its surrounding areas have been the site of a number of the alleged attacks and attempted attacks.
Jordanian citizen Said al-Amr was shot dead by Israeli border police in front of Damascus Gate on Friday, amid a three-day spike in violence which also saw the killing of four Palestinians at the hands of Israeli security forces. In response to alleged attacks, Israeli forces commonly detain relatives of Palestinian suspects, in addition to a broader policy of what rights groups have called “collective punishment” of Palestinian civilians, including punitive home demolitions and the withholding of bodies of Palestinians slain in attacks.
