Israeli forces are to impose the closure until Thursday, Awad said, adding that since maintenance work began Sunday morning, Palestinian cars have been barred from entering or exiting through the village’s northern entrance.Awad told Ma’an the maintenance work will likely continue to negatively affect the daily life of Palestinian residents and their ability to travel to and from the town.
The road closure comes amid heightened Israeli military presence in the Hebron district in the wake of a number of alleged attacks committed by Palestinians in the area, with the Israeli army adding an additional battalion to the district and imposing a complete blockade on the village of Bani Naim.
Israel’s response to attacks — such as punitive home demolitions, the sealing of entire villages, mass detention campaigns, and withholding the bodies of Palestinians slain while committing attacks — has been condemned by rights groups, who have said the measures amount to “collective punishment” and represent a clear violation of international law.
